The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has signed a $4.5 million partnership agreement with E-Tech Engineering Pte Ltd to carry out major development and upgrading works at the Nasinu Cemetery, a project expected to create around 17,000 new burial plots.

The agreement was signed yesterday between Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva and E-Tech Engineering Director Ashneel Singh.

Mr Moceisuva said the project had taken nearly three years to finalise, largely due to public concerns over cemetery space and internal documentation and financial process challenges.

“On behalf of the Fiji Corrections Service, I would like to thank you for persevering with us,” Mr Moceisuva said.

“This has been a long-standing project and at times it was frustrating when we could not implement it due to documentation and financial system issues.”

He said the signing of the contract now allows work to begin on a project of significant public importance.

“This project is very important to the public in terms of space at the cemetery,” Mr Moceisuva said.

“The available space we have currently is very small and will not last us long, and may even be exhausted within this first quarter.”

According to FCS, the planned expansion will provide approximately 17,000 burial plots, which is expected to meet demand for up to seven years at the current death rate.

Mr Moceisuva said the Government hopes the investment and partnership will deliver the outcomes required to address the long-term burial needs of the growing population.

E-Tech Engineering Director Ashneel Singh thanked the Fiji Corrections Service and the Government for the opportunity, confirming that his team is already mobilising on site.

“Our team is already on the ground in Nasinu setting up the site office,” Mr Singh said.

“We truly appreciate the confidence placed in our company for such an important project that directly impacts the public, and we assure you that we will carry out the work proactively and with due diligence until completion.”

Construction works are expected to commence shortly.
