The Eastern Division has become the first stop for nationwide consultations on Fiji’s National Rural Development Policy (NRDP), focusing on improving rural and outer island development.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka said the consultation aimed at improving how rural development was planned and delivered across the country.
“Our communities in Rotuma, Lau, Lomaiviti and Kadavu are rich in culture, tradition, social cohesion and natural resources. Yet, they also face persistent and structural challenges,” he said.
He said these communities continue to struggle with high transportation costs, limited access to markets and services, climate vulnerability, and increasing pressure on livelihoods.
“These challenges cannot be addressed in isolation, nor by any single institution. They require strong partnerships.”
The workshop is part of nationwide consultations to inform the development of the NRDP, a key deliverable under the Change Management Programme and a requirement of the Fiji National Development Plan 2025–2029.
The policy follows the recent review of the Integrated Rural Development Framework 2009, which highlighted weaknesses in coordination, fragmented implementation, climate and disaster risks, and the need for a more people-first and resilient approach to rural development.
Mr Ditoka said the NRDP was being developed through a co-creation approach, placing community voices at the centre of decision-making.
“We recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for rural development.”
He encouraged participants to openly share their experiences, challenges and practical ideas.
“This means ensuring that no island, no village and no community is left behind because of distance or disadvantage.”
