A heavy rain alert remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group as a slow-moving trough of low pressure continues to affect the country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says the system is expected to bring persistent cloud cover, rain and occasional thunderstorms over the next few days.

Forecasts indicate occasional rain across Fiji, with heavy falls at times and a few thunderstorms.

Significant rainfall has already been recorded in the past 24 hours up to 3am on Monday, with several stations registering high totals.

Nanoko recorded the highest rainfall at 81.5 millimetres, followed by Wairikicake with 80.0mm and Dreketilailai and Udu Point with 79.5mm each. Keiyasi received 70.0mm, Bukuya 60.5mm, Tubenasolo 57.5mm, Rarawai 55.0mm and Dobuilevu 52.0mm.

Authorities warn that the continued heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas, including informal settlements and business districts. Irish crossings may become impassable, causing traffic disruptions.

Surface flooding is also possible on streets in urban areas with poor drainage, while wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours may increase the risk of road accidents.
