The Lautoka man who illegally dumped rubbish at a waterfall in Waiyavi two weeks ago only paid $40 as fine.

This has prompted the Lautoka City Council to request Government for an increase in fines for illegal dumping of waste by offenders.

Council head of services Shalend Singh told this newspaper yesterday the current fine of $40 is not enough to bear the extra costs that the council pays for clearing disposed waste.

“As per the current Litter Act 2008 the fine is $40,” he said.

“LCC has made strong submissions to the Ministry of Environment for a review of Act and increase in fines at the earliest that would be deterrent for offenders.”

He said despite this the council continued to work tirelessly.

“After successful enforcement by Litter Prevention Officers at Savu St for illegal dumping, the team have again successfully investigated and identified the offenders for illegal dumping along Queens Rd in Wairabetia, Lautoka.

“Upon tireless investigation, offender was identified and issued with three litter fines for this offence.”

Mr Singh said the offender was notified to remove the rubbish.

“Reinspection done today (Sunday) revealed that all the three heaps of litter was cleared by offender using an excavator and truck.

“On the same note an awareness was also carried out to vendors at Saweni on littering and one offender was also issued litter fine.”

He added the council’s rural garbage contractor was engaged to clear all litter heaps at Saweni Top opposite Superfoods Supermarket.

“Council issues stern warning that every effort will be done to trace litter offenders and penalise offenders under provisions of Litter Act 2008.

“Council also seeks support of citizens to help keep Lautoka City clean and beautiful.”

Mr Singh said the council has employed four full-time Litter Prevention Officers, demonstrating its commitment in dealing with litter issues.
