India and Fiji have agreed to extend their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agriculture cooperation for a further five years and to establish a Joint Working Group to strengthen collaboration in agriculture and food security.
India’s Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Minister of Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, confirmed the outcome following his meeting with Fiji’s Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, at Krishi Bhawan in New Delhi.
Chouhan said India and Fiji share enduring historical ties built on mutual respect, cooperation, and strong cultural and people-to-people links.
During the meeting, the two ministers agreed that the extended MoU and the formation of a Joint Working Group would provide a stronger framework to deepen bilateral cooperation in the agriculture sector.
Discussions also focused on expanding student exchange programmes, strengthening capacity building initiatives, and enhancing technology and knowledge sharing between the two countries.
Areas of cooperation identified included agricultural research, genetic exchange, and joint efforts to reduce food loss and waste.
The agreement is expected to further support Fiji’s agricultural development and food security goals while reinforcing India’s engagement with Pacific Island nations through practical, long-term partnerships.
