DESPITE varied finishes short of glory, the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team remains determined to do their best as the HSBC SVNS continues.
The team has settled for a third place finish at the Dubai and Cape Town legs in November and December last year.
Head coach Osea Kolinisau reiterated how firm the team’s resolve always was and how it would not dim as the series progressed.
“Our determination hasn’t changed. I think we are not far off,” he mentioned.
“We were unlucky to lose in the semi-finals of those two games (Dubai and Cape Town), and those little things that we have to rectify are our missed tackles and our discipline.
“We have got to get it right in our decision making and that’s something we’re looking at.”
Fiji lost to New Zealand 21-24 in the cup semi-final of the Dubai 7s, and finished in third place following a 24-7 win against France after.
In Cape Town last month, Fiji lost 21-29 to Argentina in the cup semi-final and earned a podium finish with a 26-19 over France in the third place play-off later.
While the losses are difficult to bear, Kolinisau reasoned while the team did not set out to finish short of a gold medal, the aim still remained.
“We go to every tournament wanting to win. I know the boys, they don’t go into a tournament not intending to go there (to finish) in third place,” he said.
“Our will and what we’re wanting to do, it hasn’t changed and it’s our goal to try and win the series, and that hasn’t changed.
“We’re still in the running for the series and that’s something we’re taking as a positive, and we’re trying to just make sure we learn from our mistakes.”
Meanwhile, up next for his side is the Singapore 7s, which takes place from January 31 to February 1.
