FIJI has made a landmark entry onto the global technology stage, with Tupoutuah Baravilala, director-general of communications at the Ministry of Policing and Communications, named among the Top 50 Global Tech Leaders for 2026 by the Tech Diplomacy Global Institute — the first time Fiji has been represented on the prestigious international list.

The recognition underscored Fiji’s ability to punch above its weight in global technology governance and digital diplomacy, and reflects the tangible outcomes of sustained national efforts to develop, support and empower emerging leaders to contribute meaningfully at the international level.

Established in collaboration with UNESCO, the Tech Diplomacy Global Institute advances inclusive, ethical and coordinated approaches to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital trade.

Fiji’s inclusion on this platform signalled the country’s growing influence in shaping global discussions on technology and digital inclusion.

The milestone also highlighted the value of investing in young, capable leaders and reinforces the importance of continued support for leadership development that is inclusive, forward-looking and gender-responsive.

Fiji’s presence on the global tech stage affirmed that when young leaders — particularly women — are given opportunities to lead, the nation benefits from stronger representation and influence on the global stage.

Meanwhile, Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua yesterday commissioned a Starlink satellite connectivity set for Waivaka Village in Namosi, marking an important step in expanding digital access to rural communities.

The commissioning highlighted Government’s commitment to inclusive digital development under the National Digital Strategy.
