Syria Street and Argo Street in Walu Bay have been closed until further notice following an oil spill at the PetroOceania terminal along Foster Road.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) confirmed that its crews are currently on site working to contain the spill and ensure public safety.

Motorists and pedestrians are being urged to avoid the affected area and use alternative routes while operations continue.

NFA says further updates will be issued once the situation is under control and the roads are safe to reopen.

Authorities are also reminding the public not to attempt to bypass the roadblocks put in place.

Members of the public have been advised to contact emergency services on 910 if assistance is required.

“Stay tuned for further updates and developments,” Acting Chief Executive Officer Joel Israel said in the statement.

The incident has prompted heightened safety precautions in the busy industrial zone as authorities move to prevent environmental damage and minimise disruption.
