IN a solemn matanigasau ceremony (a traditional Fijian ceremony to ask for forgiveness) held at Mavana Village on Vanuabalavu in Lau, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) formally apologised to the family of the late former prime minister Laisenia Qarase, seeking forgiveness in accordance with iTaukei tradition.

A delegation of senior RFMF officers led the ceremony, acknowledging past actions and emphasising the importance of reconciliation, respect and unity within Fijian society.

Accepting the matanigasau on behalf of the Qarase family, Mrs Leba Qarase, the wife of the former PM expressed her gratitude and said forgiveness had already been extended.

The ceremony symbolised healing, reconciliation and the restoration of relationships between the two parties.
