AS carols played softly and homes across Suva filled with the sounds of festivity, one family received a surprise they will remember for years to come.
Just hours before Christmas Day, their youngest son walked through the door after years of living overseas, turning an ordinary festive evening into an emotional reunion.
Ashneel Prakash serves in the US Army and is based in Hawaii, the Suva-born soldier had quietly planned his return, landing on Christmas Eve without telling his parents or siblings.
His arrival brought tears, laughter and hugs, capturing the true spirit of Christmas which is family, love and togetherness.
“I’m here with my son and wife and it’s great to be back for Christmas. Be back with family and celebrating Christmas,” he said.
Living far from home has meant missing many simple moments that matter most.
“When I’m back in mainland US, I miss family. And then the usual tradition we have lovo and stuff, I used to miss that. And it’s always great to be surrounded by family, you know, warm welcome and just being back at home.”
He last visited Fiji in 2023 and has been in the US since 2017.
Comparing Christmas abroad to home, he noted the difference in seasons and atmosphere.
“It’s mostly winter that side and Christmas this side is more like summer and I prefer to spend time with family outdoors which is why I prefer a summer Christmas in Fiji.”
Sharing a message for the season, he said, “Enjoy responsibly. You work for it. Don’t let anything spoil it and have an empathy for those who are unfortunate around you. Help them with whatever you can and enjoy.”
