Families and community groups packed Naselai beach in Tailevu on New Year’s Day, continuing a long-standing tradition of starting the year with food, fellowship and togetherness.
Jiutajia Salabuco said the outing had become an annual practice for many families, especially those with children.
“We mostly come here during new year’s, it’s like a tradition every year,” she said.
“Our children enjoy swimming, so we come here every year.”
She said the Waila community arrived together with their Sunday school team, creating a lively atmosphere that included people of all ages.
“We are here as a whole community.
“From the youngest to the eldest, everyone is here enjoying themselves.”
Ms Salabuco said the youngest members of the group were two one-year- olds, while senior citizens were also part of the outing.
“Our pu and tua are here as well.”
“They’re mostly at the back resting and preparing for lunch.”
Food preparation, she said, was done through a shared potluck arrangement.
“We just bring whatever we can bring.”
“Some bring lovo, and mostly food from last night too, it’s about sharing with each other,” said Ms Salabuco.
“Despite the beach being crowded with visitors, Ms Salabuco encouraged others to experience Naselai during the festive season.
“Happy new year to everyone, come to Naselai, the laughter and fun are all here.”
For many, the New Year’s Day picnic marked a fresh start rooted in unity, culture, and togetherness.
