Fiji Airways Fijiana Women’s Sevens team head coach Richard Walker has given a candid update on the team’s progress after their recent tournaments in Dubai and Cape Town.
Reflecting on the Dubai leg, Walker said, the girls were excited to finally get to the tournament after an intense pre-season.
“We played some really good rugby and got a couple of wins early, which just squeaked us through to the semi-finals. That was really pleasing for the team, and for our friends, family, and fans around the world.”
The Fijiana finished strong in Dubai, securing a top four spot which Walker described as a positive start to their campaign.
However, the Cape Town tournament brought different challenges.
“After a bit of a recovery week and a couple of training sessions, we got into the tournament and a couple of scores and errors just didn’t go our way,” he explained.
“We ended up not making the top four there like we did in Dubai. We lost our bottom semi but the girls finished really strong with a win over Great Britain, which was very pleasing.”
Walker highlighted the positives and the areas for improvement, adding,
“We came away with some good positives but also some really good work-ons that we hope to work through before our next tournaments in Singapore and Perth.”
Looking forward, the coach acknowledged the team’s need to keep focus over the holiday period.
“We’re looking forward to the Christmas and New Year break, but we also know that we need to work over those periods and get ready for the next camp,” he said.
With the next tournaments on the horizon, Walker’s message was clear: the Fijiana Women’s Sevens team remains determined and focused on building momentum for the challenges ahead.
