The Matasawalevu Volleyball Tournament concluded successfully yesterday, bringing together youths and families at Naibita, Wainibuka.
The main aim of the tournament was to focus on Youth Matters and showcase the raw talent present in the village.
A total of 12 men’s and four women’s teams participated in the tournament, highlighting the hidden talent from villages around the area.
Competition director Jerry Cakau expressed satisfaction with the turnout during the tournament and was thrilled to see teams from various locations such as Nadi, Suvavou, Wainibuka, Rakiraki, and Tailevu joining in the spirited games.
The primary objective of the competition was to promote volleyball in rural areas and nurture talent at the grassroots level.
“The main aim of the competition is, we want to promote Volleyball competitions in the rural areas, and also, we want to promote Volleyball at grassroot level.
“Along the rural areas we know they play Volleyball, but its good for us to promote competitive Volleyball for the youths of the community,” said Cakau.
“We are also thankful or great to see national players and former national players also taking part, it gives a different level of competition for all.”
With the festive season upon us, the organisers intended to provide an alternative to potential negative activities by offering the youths a chance to enjoy sports and camaraderie.
Joel Oli, a sponsor of the tournament from Papua New Guinea, viewed the event as a way to give back to the villagers of Naibita, where his wife hails from.
He was impressed by the level of competition and the dedication shown by the youths in the village, who often lack exposure to such opportunities.
Oli believed that the tournament could help youths grow and develop their talents further, ultimately benefiting the community as a whole.
Oli also recognised the tournament’s role in redirecting the focus of the participants and reminding them of their worth and capabilities.
He expressed gratitude to all the teams that took part in the tournament, contributing to the competitive and vibrant atmosphere of the event.
