OVERFLOWING rubbish bins near homes and businesses in Nasinu pose serious health risks, with residents warning that ongoing dumping is creating unhygienic and unsafe living conditions.
Jyotika Vikashni, who lives and operates a business opposite a dumpsite in Caubati, said the bins have not been cleared for more than a week.
“It’s really stinky so we cannot open our doors and windows,” she said, adding the situation has affected her health and ability to work.
Ms Vikashni claimed dead animals and loose rubbish are being left in and around the bins.
She said the problem is compounded by illegal dumping from people outside the neighbourhood.
“People from the housing authority houses and people from various areas, business trucks and vans come and dump their rubbish here.”
She said rubbish from within the settlement is not much compared to rubbish being dumped by outsiders.
Nasinu Town Council CEO Felix Magnus said rubbish is collected on time, but the issue lies with people from outside the areas dumping rubbish illegally.
But Ms Vikashni expressed concerns that improper bin placement on soil is causing further damage to water pipes and infrastructure.
“I request the council to put cement pads, enforce strict fines, and install cameras to catch illegal dumping.
“It is not only about cleanliness, it is a matter of hygiene and public health.”
