WOMEN’S rugby will be a major focus area for the Fiji Rugby Union as it finalises its new strategic plan for the coming years.

FRU chief executive officer Koli Sewabu said a dedicated ‘Women in Rugby Strategy’ would be drafted in the next few weeks and included under the main FRU strategic framework.

He made the comments following the FRU General Assembly held in Nadi, where member unions reviewed the 2025 season and discussed plans for 2026 and beyond.

“We looked at areas of development, focusing on participation and pathway, training and education, governance and administration, women’s rugby and also what strategy we need to draft in the next few weeks for women in rugby,” Sewabu said.

He said the General Assembly provided an important opportunity to reflect on what was achieved in 2025, as well as the challenges faced by unions particularly around the domestic fund.

“We looked back at the year 2025, what has been achieved and what were some of the issues we all went through, especially around the domestic fund,” he said.

Sewabu said the meeting also allowed FRU to present its proposed calendar of activities for 2026 and beyond, which is aligned with its high-performance programs.

“I think we can almost lock in that calendar for the next couple of years because it is aligned with our high-performance initiatives,” Sewabu said.

Feedback from member unions was described as the final consultation phase before the new FRU strategic plan is completed.

“We had an opportunity to get feedback from our members on the proposed new strategic plan. This was probably our final consultation before we finalise it,” he said.

Other key discussions included governance and administration of provincial unions, competition structures and the overall management of the game at domestic level.

Sewabu thanked member unions for their continued support and engagement as Fiji Rugby looks to strengthen its foundations and grow areas such as women’s rugby in the years ahead.
