A 45-year-old man has been remanded in custody after allegedly fatally stabbing a farmer on Boxing Day in Batinivuriwai Settlement, Wainunu, Bua in Vanua Levu.
Jonasa Matakibau appeared before Magistrate Panapasa Tawake at the Savusavu Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The case has been transferred to the Labasa High Court and is set to be heard on January 6.
Mr Matakibau faces one count of murder.
Police reports indicated that the victim, whose identity has not been released, was allegedly involved in a violent altercation at the Batinivuriwai Settlement bus shelter.
The dispute escalated into a brawl during which the victim suffered a fatal stab wound to the chest.
The man was found lying by the roadside and despite efforts to rush him to the Wainunu Health Centre, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
