Twelve people in Nadi will start 2026 homeless after their homes were destroyed in two separate fires on Boxing Day.

The first to lose their home was father and son Arveen and Arnav Kumar of Carreras, Votulevu who woke up to flames spreading from a nearby house.

“We noticed the fire around 8.26am and I quickly woke up my father who was still asleep in the house,” said 15-year-old Arnav.

“I don’t know how the fire started but all I know it came from the next house.

“They were inside but they managed to get out safely.”

The father and son pair could not save their belongings.

“By the time we got out the fire had spread.

“We did not want to risk going back inside.”

A mechanic by profession, Mr Kumar said he survived on what he could earn from his small business.

“I do most of my work from home.

“But after this fire, I don’t know what to do.

“That was our only income.”

He said they were awaiting the completion of police investigations before they could re-enter the property to try and salvage what they could of their belongings.

Meanwhile, across town, a family of 10 living in Nawejikuma in Nawaka came back from Boxing Day celebrations to a burnt home.

According to police, the house was vacant when the fire started around 8.30pm with a total damage estimated to be at $80,000.

Noting the series of property fires, National Fire Authority acting CEO Joel Israel expressed concern over the incidents.

“While we are relieved that no injuries were reported, the loss of a home is significant and deeply concerning, particularly during this time of year,” Mr Israel said.

“Incidents such as this highlight the serious consequences of fire and the importance of responsible behaviour and fire safety awareness at all times.”
