The U20 competition is set to light up the second leg of the Agromarketing Grassroots Fiji 7s in Bua next month, reflecting the growing interest and solid turnout seen at the recent series at HFC Bank Stadium.

Organisers have confirmed that 24 U20 teams will feature in Bua, surpassing the numbers of both men’s and women’s teams, with 14 and 10 respectively.

This deliberate focus on youth development is a clear response to the overwhelming demand from the first leg in Suva, where 20 U20 teams competed, well above the initial target of 12.

Fiji Sports Council CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure explained that while the tournament ideally hosts 16 local teams from Bua and nearby areas, alongside eight from other regions, the high level of interest in the youth category has prompted an increase in U20 participation.

“That is why the Bua leg will feature more U20 teams than men’s teams,” he said.

Vakalalabure added that the move is part of a broader plan to strengthen pathways for young players by providing competitive environments that align with national standards on and off the field.

Besides rugby sevens, volleyball will also be included in the Bua programme, expected to attract strong community support and add to the event’s appeal.

With this combination of youth rugby, senior men’s and women’s competition, and volleyball, the Bua leg promises to be a vibrant multi-sport festival, continuing the series’ mission to develop grassroots sports across Fiji.
