Police will be strictly monitoring black market liquor shops that are illegally operating at night.

Over the weekend, a few of these illegal operators were being monitored by police in Nadi, where drunkards were being turned away.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe told this newspaper yesterday it was part of their festive season operations.

Mr Vusonilawe is urging members of the public to assist by reporting matters directly to the National Command Centre on 9905296 or to him on 9904905.

Meanwhile, police night operations teams have been conducting stop and search of vehicles and youths found loitering in an effort to keep communities safe.

In a statement, police said despite the repeated warnings and requests not to drink and drive, some drivers continued to gamble with not only their lives but other innocent road users.

A total of 29 drink driving arrests were made last weekend, including a police officer.
