THE government has extended a helping hand to the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Rugby Referees Association to aid in its progress.

Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, declared this in his keynote address to rugby referees at the inaugural Fiji Rugby Referees Awards in Suva at the weekend.

“The government is ready to support the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Rugby Referees Association in moving forward; your contribution drives our success,” Saukuru said.

A round of applause was the response drawn from all in attendance at the Vodafone Arena.

He expressed his excitement at what lay ahead for rugby referees, and how their diligence could help carve and fortify the way forward.

“I am excited about what the future holds for Fiji’s rugby referees. With your dedication, I am confident we will reach new heights, and our referees will continue to be the proud unsung hero of the game of rugby.”

Saukuru also emphasised on the key role rugby referees played in ensuring the honour of the game was upheld.

“Without your tireless effort, no match, no matter how passionate, can truly succeed,” he said.

“They (rugby referees) face the brunt of complaints and endure immense pressure from friends, players and fans, yet they maintain professionalism and uphold the honour of the game.

“I commend the dedication and sacrifices each referee makes; they commit countless hours to training, mastering the rules and travelling across all levels, from the grassroots to the international stage, so that our ranking remains fair and competitive.”

“Your efforts do not go unnoticed.”

Meanwhile, in moving the vote of thanks at the ceremony, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Referees Association, Talemo Waqa, commended the minister for his expression of support to the FRU and the referees association.
