The Fiji Times can confirm that Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel has removed former banker Cecil Browne as chairman of the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) — appointing former FCCC chief executive Joel Abraham as his replacement.
The decision was made on December 24.
When contacted for clarification today, Mr Immanuel said he would respond in due course.
“Will advise in the afternoon later in the day,” he told this newspaper.
Mr Browne’s removal comes just days after the FCCC announced an increase to Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) tariffs — a decision that sparked significant public debate.
Questions regarding the change in leadership were also sent today to both Mr Browne and Mr Abraham.
Responses were still pending at the time of publication.
The FCCC plays a central role in regulating prices, protecting consumers, and overseeing competition across key sectors.
Mr Abraham previously served as FCCC CEO before moving on to other senior roles in government agencies.
Further details on the rationale for the change — and whether it is linked in any way to recent tariff determinations — have not yet been disclosed.
We will provide updates as responses are received and more information becomes available.
