The future of Vodafone Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata will be decided by the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) board by the end of this week or early next week according to chairman Akuila Masi.
Kativerata’s contract was a primary topic at the FNRL’s recent annual general meeting.
Kativerata’s position is under intense scrutiny following a disappointing 2025 Pacific Nations Bowl Challenge performance.
Although the Fiji Bati started strong with a 44-24 win against the Cook Islands Aitu, they suffered a heavy 18-50 defeat to the Papua New Guinea Kumuls.
This year was expected to be a redemption year after last year’s 10-22 loss to the Kumuls at home, which disappointed many fans.
The repeated losses to Papua New Guinea raise serious concerns about Kativerata’s coaching, especially since the Fiji team included several seasoned NRL and established rugby league players, unlike their opponents.
With Fiji placed in the pool of death for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup, the FNRL board aims to make the best decision for the team’s future.
Local clubs have called for Kativerata’s resignation, and there is significant pressure from the wider community, with many expressing frustrations on social media following the Bati’s recent performances.
Clubs have also called for the inclusion of more local-based players into the Bati.
