FIJI has received an invitation from the Israeli Government for soldiers to be deployed to Gaza for peacekeeping duties.

Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs Pio Tikoduadua made this known at the official welcoming ceremony of the first battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) held at Black Rock Camp in Votualevu last week.

Mr Tikoduadua reminded the soldiers that it would not be an easy decision for Government considering the violence in the Israeli- Gaza conflict.

“I want to inform you that we have received an invitation to the Fiji Government on sending troops to Gaza,” he said.

“This is something that Government will need to decide on. It’s not going to be an easy decision. If it happens, we have to stand firm and be prepared to go.

“I am not saying that our troops will go, but if it happens for them to be deployed for peacekeeping duties. I know our troops will stand prepared for this task, but the time will come.

“As for now, I commend you all for your lives and your safe arrival back home. Enjoy this time to reconnect and spend quality time with your families.”

Mr Tikoduadua also acknowledged leaders and senior officers who commanded the UNAMI mission, emphasising the heavy responsibility that comes with leadership during overseas deployments.

“It is never easy to lead on tour. As a leader, your greatest responsibility is to bring every soldier home alive and well. I thank our commanders for carrying out that duty with integrity and care.”
