Tonga among countries affected by new US visa restrictions

Listen to this article:

Tonga has been included in a new United States decision to partially suspend visa issuance under Presidential Proclamation 10998, which takes effect from January 1, 2026.

Under the proclamation, the US Department of State will partially suspend the issuance of visas to nationals of 19 countries, including Tonga, citing national security and public safety concerns.

For Tongan nationals, the suspension applies to non-immigrant B-1/B-2 visitor visas, as well as F, M and J student and exchange visitor visas, in addition to most immigrant visas.

The move strengthens “rigorous, security-focused screening and vetting procedures” to ensure individuals entering the United States do not pose security risks.

While the restrictions are broad, several exceptions apply. These include lawful permanent residents, dual nationals travelling on passports from non-restricted countries, certain US government special immigrant visa holders, participants in major sporting events, and limited humanitarian cases.

The announcement will impact Tongans seeking to travel to the US for tourism, education, work exchanges, or permanent migration.
