SAVUSAVU Hospital has operated for a year without an X-ray service, forcing patients to travel to Labasa Hospital or pay for private imaging.

Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa said the hospital could not restore X-ray services until a major electrical upgrade was completed.

He said the ministry had a clear plan to install a new X-ray unit, either a floor-mounted or ceiling-mounted system.

“This installation requires a critical electrical upgrade to the hospital’s existing power supply,” he said, adding an electrical upgrade has been planned for this financial year.

“Once that is completed, the new X-ray system can be installed to restore reliable diagnostic services for the community,” Mr Ravunawa said.

For now, expectant mothers, the elderly, accident victims, and those with suspected fractures continue to endure long trips and extra costs just to get basic imaging.

Mr Ravunawa said the ministry was committed to a safe, phased, and practical strengthening of services, while continuing to support frontline staff.
