Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed concern over comments attributed to the Chairman of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund, Ahmed Bhamji, who this week suggested that Opposition Members of Parliament have no right to demand answers on how the Government plans to revive the sugar industry.

In a statement, Seruiratu said such remarks misunderstand the role of the Opposition in a parliamentary democracy.

“In a parliamentary democracy, the role of the Opposition is clear and well-established. It is our constitutional responsibility to hold the Government and public institutions to account on behalf of the people of Fiji,” he said.

Seruiratu stressed that the sugar industry is a national industry supported by public policy, public resources and the labour of thousands of Fijians, making its future a matter of ongoing public interest.

“The Opposition has both the right and the duty to seek answers, demand transparency and scrutinise the Government’s plans to ensure that they are credible, inclusive, and in the best interests of the country,” he said.

He added that supporting the sugar industry does not mean avoiding criticism. “Support includes acknowledging positive initiatives where they exist, but it also includes constructive criticism where policies are unclear, progress is inadequate or accountability is lacking.”

Seruiratu also reminded that as chair of a statutory body, Mr Bhamji holds a position of public trust.

“With that trust comes accountability, not only to the Government of the day, but to Parliament and the people of Fiji. Robust questioning by the Opposition is not an attack; it is an essential safeguard.”

He said the Opposition would not be deterred by remarks made in response to legitimate scrutiny. “We will continue to speak for farmers, workers and affected communities who expect accountability, transparency and honest leadership.”

“As Leader of the Opposition, I will continue to discharge my constitutional duty without fear or favour and in the best interests of the people of Fiji,” Seruiratu said.
