The United Nations General Assembly on Monday adopted, by an overwhelming majority, a resolution affirming the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
A total of 164 countries voted in favor, while only eight opposed the resolution: Israel, the United States, Micronesia, Argentina, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea, Palau, and Nauru.
Nine countries abstained, including Fiji, Tonga, Ecuador, Togo, Panama, Cameroon, the Marshall Islands, Samoa, and South Sudan.
The resolution highlights global opposition to Israel’s occupation measures and settlement practices, which continue to impede the Palestinian people’s ability to exercise their right to self-determination and live in dignity. It also cites the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land is unlawful and should end promptly.
Palestine’s Permanent Observer to the UN, Riyad Mansour, welcomed the resolution, thanking the countries that voted in favor and emphasizing the broad international consensus supporting Palestinian self-determination.
