Police teams are currently on standby throughout the Western Division in case heavy rain forces the evacuation of families from low-lying areas, says Divisional Police Commander West SSP Iakobo Vaisewa.
SSP Vaisewa urged members of the public to take necessary precautions, considering the number of crossings and waterways that have been submerged by floodwaters.
“We are monitoring the weather; it really depends on how many officers we will send out, but we have a two-dimensional team on standby in all the districts,” he said.
“That’s our response to natural disasters and we have been planning for that.”
SSP Vaisewa also issued a stern warning to parents to keep watch over their children.
“Parents need to look after their kids, do not allow them to go out for swimming or playing in drains because anything can happen.
“So, we request the parents to do their work by looking after the safety of their children.”
Meanwhile, the Divisional Commissioner West Apolosi Lewaqai said as of yesterday no evacuation centres have been opened.
