GOLF Fiji will open its 2026 season with a nationwide junior tournament at Novotel on January 10, inviting young golfers from around the country to compete free of charge.

President Amitesh Chandra said the one-day event aims to bring all junior golfers together to help the organisation identify true participation numbers and shape development plans for the year.

“Golf Fiji will cover all entry fees and provide lunch for every junior player,” he said.

“We want clubs to send their juniors in big numbers because this will give us a clear picture of how many young golfers we have.”

Fiji currently has more than 50 active junior golfers, with numbers rising through club-supported programmes, particularly in the Central Division.

The January event will remove financial barriers that often limit junior participation.

“This is part of our commitment to making golf more accessible,” Chandra said. “We want children from all backgrounds to come out and enjoy the sport.”

The junior tournament will be followed by the Fiji Amateur Championship in March, before the season builds toward the Fiji Open later in the year.

Chandra said he hopes the free event will encourage more families to introduce their children to golf.

“It’s an opportunity for young players to compete in a supportive environment and experience what the sport can offer,” he said.
