SEVEN months after its grand opening, the new Savusavu market is already struggling to contain a surge in vendor interest, raising concerns of overcrowding and pushing authorities to consider urgent solutions.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa said the rapid growth in demand took them by surprise.

He said the market’s design was originally based on the number of vendors operating at the time with room to accommodate both existing stallholders and a reasonable number of new ones.

“Now we’re seeing more vendors wanting a space, and overcrowding has become an issue,” Mr Nalumisa said.

With stall numbers stretched beyond capacity, the ministry is now exploring alternative options, including the creation of satellite markets around Savusavu.

“If needed, we may have to create satellite markets, so people don’t all have to come into town. We can set them up in locations that are more accessible to the public.

“The ministry would also review the role of “casual” vendors, those who travel in from villages or farming communities to sell produce mainly on Fridays or Saturdays, as they contribute to the congestion.”

He said the goal was to ensure every vendor had a fair chance to earn a living while keeping the market environment safe, organised and accessible for customers.
