THE women’s rugby space remains a major priority and challenge for Fiji Rugby Football Union.
Acting CEO Koli Sewabu said unions and stakeholders must give more attention to developing the women’s programme from grassroots level.
“The women’s space has always been a challenging one for us, so it was important to talk about that today and the unions and our grassroots area to put a lot more focus on our women’s programme,” Sewabu said.
He said one of the key issues is that women’s structures are often tied too closely to men’s rugby systems. Fiji Rugby is now looking at new ways to grow the women’s game independently.
” Also look at strategic ways of how we can break away from aligning with our men’s rugby system and come up with solutions on how we can really enhance and grow the women’s game.”
Sewabu confirmed that a dedicated Women in Rugby Strategy will be drafted in the coming weeks. This will sit inside the broader Fiji Rugby strategic plan.
He said unions must start building capacity and structures that can support long-term growth of women’s rugby, especially with increasing international opportunities.
