A small group of former MPs and Senators from Fiji’s June 2006 Parliament gathered in Suva on Saturday for a symbolic dissolution ceremony, marking the official closure of a Parliament left in limbo following Bainimarama’s 2006 coup.
Former MP Niko Nawaikula, who served as Deputy Speaker in 2006, moved the motion for the symbolic dissolution.
Also in presence were Ro Teimumu Kepa and former Speaker Pita Nacuva.
Posting on social media, Nawaikula said the 2013 Constitution and court rulings had distorted democratic norms, creating a precedent where coups and subsequent elections could legitimize unconstitutional acts.
He also highlighted concerns over immunity provisions, executive interference in state institutions, and the removal of protections for iTaukei cultural rights.
“This gathering serves as a reminder that the struggle to restore genuine democracy in Fiji is not over,” he said, calling on citizens to uphold the rule of law and the will of the people.
