Margaret Elbourne and Charlotte Tabadromu were the toast of the Fiji One women’s hockey side’s 2-1 victory over the Wanderers Goannas team at the National Hockey Centre in Suva yesterday.
The duo scored Fiji’s winning goals in the match, part of the Australian Wanderers Tour of its under-13 and 14 teams.
Heidi Rodgers scored the lone goal for the visitors.
Team coach Fatima Mario said their progression since the competition began meant having to work around injuries afflicting the team.
“There’s a lot of fatigue over the past few days because of the heat we got here in Fiji, so our girls are just trying to manoeuvre through the injuries and try to just recover as quickly as possible,” Mario explained.
He credited the support of parents and guardians in helping their young ones continue to maintain an onward course in the competition.
“We’re grateful to our parents, they’ve provided their lunches, Powerade (energy drink), recovery replenishments to continue keeping our girls on par.”
With the young squad making a steady yet firm stride through their matches, he reflected on how the atmosphere in camp had been.
“The culture has been building up in the last few days, it’s good to see that, because we only had about weeks to put the squad together.
“Over the last few days, we’ve been seeing them come together, just getting over their mistakes, working, uplifting, motivating each other from scratch – the sisterhood is coming out.”
Meanwhile, their final match against the Goannas will take place at 1.30pm today.
