One of two men jailed last month for raping their biological daughters blamed demons for his crimes.
The 53-year-old, convicted of sexually violating his then five-year-old biological daughter over a five-year period, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 18 years.
The man pleaded guilty to 12 counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault.
According to the November 19 ruling, between January 2020 and April 2025, the man exploited opportunities when he was alone with the victim in their home. The offences persisted for over five years, beginning when the victim was in kindergarten.
The incidents typically occurred in the mornings or after school, when other family members were absent or asleep. The pattern of offending involved threats and manipulation.
He would intimidate the child by stating she would not be sent to school or denied new school shoes if she did not comply.
The offending on specific known dates were described in detail, showing repeated abuse and escalating sexual violence, with emissions of semen and subsequent acts following forced compliance.
According to pre-sentencing records, the man blamed supernatural forces (demons) for his crimes, failed to accept responsibility and showed limited remorse, undermining prospects for rehabilitation.
In a separate case, a 48-year-old convicted of incest involving his 18-year-old biological daughter this year has been sentenced to nine years and six months with a non-parole period of six years and six months.
Justice Daniel Goundar delivered both sentences at the High Court in Suva.
