Unity Fiji has raised objections to a new political party seeking registration, accusing it of “stealing” the party’s by-line, “People First.”
The proposed party, formed by former Fiji First members, has applied to use the phrase as its party name.
Unity Fiji leader Savenaca Narube expressed strong disapproval.
“When I heard about this several months ago, I had asked this new party not to use our by-line as its name. But in keeping with the dictatorial attitude of their original party, they have discarded our wishes and disrespected our hard work of creating this by-line,” he said.
“The voters must be extremely wary of a political party who starts off by stealing our by-line. We believe that such a party does not have the originality, creativity, and innovation to create its own. It should not be taken seriously.”
Narube confirmed that Unity Fiji would submit a formal objection to the Fiji Elections Office, citing several grounds: the party has been using the by-line since 2017.
“I ask the FEO not to allow them to use our by-line.”
