The controversial Employment Relations (Amendment) Bill 2025 will not be tabled in Parliament this week, with its introduction now effectively postponed until March 2026.

After this week’s adjournment, Parliament will next convene in the first week of March.

Speaker Filimone Jitoko informed Parliament this morning that he had received a request from the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs for additional time to carry out consultations.

The delay comes amid strong criticism from the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC), which has accused the Parliamentary Sector Committee reviewing the Bill of showing “no urgency,” lacking independence, and conducting its work in a manner “generally anti-union and anti-worker.”

FTUC National Secretary Felix Anthony had said the union body has “lost faith” in the Committee’s handling of the legislation, which was referred to it nearly a month before public hearings began.

The Fiji Employers Federation had called for the postponement of this proposed law, asking for wider consultations.
