A father-of-seven convicted of raping a 10-year-old girl while under the influence of alcohol has been sentenced to 12 years with a non-parole period of 10 years.
The 63-year-old scuba diver was found guilty of a count of rape and two counts of indecent assault.
Court documents show the victim came from a broken family and was extremely vulnerable. She was under the care of her cousin after her mother married another man.
The victim ended up in the man’s house because she had no other option but to be with her cousin’s family, who had moved into the man’s house after the COVID pandemic.
The young girl did not raise complain to anyone immediately because she was scared.
She eventually complained to her teacher, who referred the matter to the police.
