A 27-year-old convicted of blackmailing his 13-year-old nephew into submitting to his lustful demands has been sentenced to 12 years in prison with a non-parole period of eight years.

The unmarried salesman by profession was convicted of two counts of rape and two of criminal intimidation committed in 2020 and 2021 in Sigatoka.

Court records show the man took a video of the victim bathing and used it to blackmail him. He then threatened to post the video on social media and kill him if he failed to follow instructions. The man moved to the victim’s place in Korotogo for study purposes, where they both shared a room.

The victim, who was terrified and ashamed, was raped by the man on several occasions, using the same tactic two to three times a week.

The man was sentenced by Justice Aruna Aluthge at the High Court in Lautoka.

In a separate case, a 40-year-old man convicted of sexually violating his nine-year-old stepdaughter was sentenced to 14 years and five months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 11 years.

The man was found guilty of two counts of rape and sexual assault by Justice Daniel Goundar at the High Court in Suva.

Records show the man was living in a de facto relationship with the victim’s mother.

The man has three previous convictions, including one for attempted rape.

Both sentences were delivered on November 28.
