Assistant Minister for Justice Ratu Josaia Niudamu told Parliament yesterday that Fiji must move toward early public disclosure of election dates, saying it is an international best practice that strengthens fairness, improves voter turnout and reduces administrative burdens.
He was speaking on the joint Electoral Commission and Fijian Elections Office report.
“The committee supports the Election Commission’s position on advanced public disclosure of election dates, and recommends that such dates be announced early to ensure adequate preparation time for voters and stakeholders,” he said.
Raty Niudamu outlined several reasons why an early announcement is considered global best practice.
“First, it will greatly assist the Electoral Commission and the FEO in operational planning and will reduce operational and administrative costs.”
He said it also ensures voters are better prepared.
“Secondly, the early announcement can contribute to increased voter turnout, as it allows voters to organise themselves around the proposed election date.”
Ratu Niudamu highlighted the added benefits for Fijians living overseas.
“It would be of benefit to our Fijian diaspora. Once the election date is announced, the postal applications open. This gives them ample time to apply for the postal ballot and gives the FEO enough time to dispatch the ballots.”
He said early disclosure also prevents ruling parties from having an unfair advantage.
“Lastly, it ensures fairness — a level playing field for political parties and candidates. Everyone knows the election date and has equal time to prepare, unlike the last general election.”
Ratu Niudamu said adopting the recommendation would strengthen trust and transparency in Fiji’s electoral process.
