As HIV cases continue to rise in the North, the Ministry of Health is preparing to expand the Sexual and Reproductive Health Hub in Labasa into a fully resourced centre.
Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa said the Northern Hub provides vital support, but growing demand means more specialised services are needed.
“We are expanding the Northern Hub to include specialised positions,” he said.
“These will cover medical officers, nurses, counsellors, laboratory staff, surveillance officers, pharmacy personnel, peer educators, and support staff.”
In the meantime, he said HIV care teams have been activated across all sub-divisions to ensure no Fijian is left behind.
“These teams are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage people living with HIV.
“We continue to make available viral load testing and CD4 monitoring.”
Mr Ravunawa said the ministry remains committed to a people-centred HIV response that is integrated, sustainable and prepared for future health challenges.
“We encourage all Fijians to use the services at our health facilities, learn about modes of transmission, recognise early symptoms, and help fight stigma and discrimination.”
He urged communities to follow the ABCs of prevention.
“Abstain from premarital sex and avoid injectable drugs, be faithful to your partner, and consult health officials early for testing or treatment.”
He said the fight against HIV cannot be left to the ministry alone; it requires shared responsibility and collective action.
