Fiji cannot end HIV transmission without strong harm-reduction services, says UNAIDS adviser to the Pacific Renata Ram.

Ms Ram described the recent workshop on Needle and Syringe Programs (NSPs) as “a major step forward” for the country’s HIV response.

“Needle and syringe programs are powerful public health tools,” she said.

“They provide sterile injecting equipment, reduce needle sharing, and link people to essential health and social services.”

She added that international experience had shown their effectiveness.

“Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Portugal and the United Kingdom have demonstrated how NSPs save lives, prevent outbreaks, and strengthen health systems over time.”

Ms Ram said the collaboration between national leaders, development partners and community networks had helped chart clear and practical pathways to introduce NSPs safely and effectively in Fiji.

“These efforts reduce harm, protect the most vulnerable, and move us significantly closer to ending HIV transmission in our country.”
