After a tough spell last season, the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s 7s team have shown promising signs of resurgence in the pool stages in Dubai.

With commanding wins over reigning series winner Argentina 26-19 and South Africa 28-10, the Osea Kolinisau-coached side seemed destined to recapture the confidence that once made us the kings of sevens rugby.

Vuiviawa Naduvalo’s double against Argentina was a highlight, showcasing the kind of breath-taking finishing that fans have long been craving for.

Despite a close loss to France 24-19, Fiji’s overall performance secured their spot in the semi-finals, where they faced New Zealand.

There is no doubt the team is beginning to find its rhythm, with glimpses of the dazzling offloads and slick ball movement that epitomise the Fijian flair.

However, it’s clear there’s still room for improvement.

Defence remains a concern as opponents have crossed the try line two to three times per game on average.

This defensive leakiness puts pressure on the team to continually play catch-up.

Fiji must become more ruthless especially at the breakdowns and tighten their line speed to shut down attacking threats.

Another area calling for attention is the balance between individual brilliance and team cohesion.

While the Fijians are known for their magic moments, finding the right moments to unleash their flair will be key to unlocking defences without losing structure.

Kolinisau will also need to relook at his kick-offs, we have yet to find another ariel expert like Semisi Naevo or Semi Kunatani to win back possession at kick-offs.

Most importantly, Fiji needs to reignite their ‘killer instinct’.

When they gain the lead, they must maintain relentless pressure and not give the opposition any chance for a comeback.
