SUVA 1 claimed the overall boys title at the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games on Friday with an impressive 10 gold, 14 silver and 6 bronze after two days of intense competition at the HFC Bank National Stadium.
Tailevu came in second with 7 gold, 1 silver, and 5 bronze and Bua finished in third place with 5 golds, 9 silvers and 2 bronze.
The win extends Suva 1 stronghold on the boy’s title for an historic 21-year winning streak.
Suva 1 head coach Bill Momo said it was a great achievement for the team but a humbling moment as well.
Momo credits the elite coaching support and the hard work of all those invested in the team as pillars of their dominance in the last two decades.
“Firstly, I would like to thank the Lord for his provisions and at the same time a lot of hard work done by our colleagues the coaches,” said Momo.
“We have been blessed with specialised coaches such in the likes of Antonio Raboiliku head coach for Marist brothers’ high school, Iniasi Kaloucava, Eugene Vollmer and also our head teachers but especially the parents and the athletes themselves.”
Momo has praised the inclusion of the participants in this year’s competition fueling some new rivalries and raising the level of competitions.
“We are really thankful that the competition was spread across many districts, I acknowledge the arrival of Kabara all the way from Lau, Vanuabalavu and the team from Yasawa and the teams Vanua Levu, Cakadrove and Taveuni and those from Viti Levu and the highlands,” he explained.
Momo thanked the organisers for the successful event noting its significance in preparing young athletes for the Fiji Finals at secondary schools level.
