New data tabled in Parliament by the Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General, Siromi Turaga, has revealed the scale of the historical case backlog within the Legal Practitioners Unit (LPU).
The figures show that as of 31st October 2025, the LPU was handling hundreds of cases dating back over a decade.
The backlog is most concentrated in complaints filed between 2012 and 2017, with each of those years contributing between 88 and 118 pending cases.
According to the data tabled in Parliament, the current Chief Registrar inherited a massive 2,177 complaints upon taking office.
The data also indicates a significant recent effort to clear the backlog.
From 2023 up to October 2025, a total of 1,055 complaints have been disposed of.
