Sports Minister Jese Saukuru in Parliament yesterday – FIJI PARLIAMENT

Sports Minister Jese Saukuru told Parliament yesterday that Fiji currently has no plans to host a leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, citing strict infrastructure requirements set by World Rugby.

“There are no plans for Fiji to host a leg of the HFPC World Rugby Sevens next year,” Saukuru said.

“Hosting the series requires meeting several criteria, with infrastructure being one of the most critical determining factors.”

He said while support for Fiji as a future host is strong, the country must first elevate its facilities to international standards.

“There is very strong support for Fiji’s potential to one day host a tournament,” he said.

“But we are fully aware that our national sporting infrastructure must first be significantly upgraded.”

World Rugby requires a minimum stadium capacity of 25,000, along with world-class amenities and professional supporting infrastructure, including broadcast capability, security, operational systems, and proximity to essential services such as hospitals and international airports.

“These requirements highlight the need for continued investment in Fiji’s sports infrastructure,” Saukuru said.

He added that government is actively exploring long-term possibilities.

“We are talking to investors, working closely with key stakeholders, and will continue to explore opportunities for future hosting,” he said.
