Former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has been appointed chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Speaker Filimone Jitoko announced in Parliament this morning.
He replaces Esrom Immanuel, who has recently assumed the role of Minister for Finance.
The PAC is a key component of parliamentary oversight, tasked with ensuring accountability and transparency in government finances.
It has the authority to conduct public hearings, summon witnesses, and receive submissions from ministries, departments, and the public.
Through these processes, the committee identifies weaknesses in financial controls and provides recommendations to improve governance and service delivery across government.
The Standing Committee on Public Accounts examines government accounts for each financial year, reviews reports from the Auditor-General, and scrutinizes any matters relating to government expenditure or activities it deems necessary.
Its work is crucial in maintaining fiscal discipline and enhancing public confidence in the management of state resources.
