The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi states persistent heavy rain will continue across the Fiji Group. The bulletin was released at 4:30pm today.

According to the centre, an active trough of low pressure with widespread cloud and rain is expected to affect the country for the next few days.

Forecasters say most areas can expect occasional to continuous rain, which will be heavy at times, along with a few thunderstorms. The forecast confidence is rated as moderate.

In the 24 hours leading up to 9am today, several locations recorded significant rainfall.

Momi registered the highest with 109mm, followed by Penang with 88mm, Nadarivatu with 86mm, Nayarabale with 72mm, Dreketilailai with 65mm and Waikubukubu with 62mm.

Authorities warn that the prolonged rain may lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone communities, informal settlements, business districts and Irish crossings.

Urban centres may experience surface flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage.

Drivers are being urged to exercise caution as wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours increase the risk of accidents.
