The Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl is a successful demonstration of community policing, public engagement, and operational dedication, setting a new, high-water mark for the future of the competition.
The Police side successfully retained the prestigious tanoa, defeating Army 26-10 at Subrail Park, but for Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, the real win was off the field.
Tudravu said that the decision to take the Sukuna Bowl to Labasa following the request by the Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, was not taken lightly.
“It’s a combination of how we see the way that we are fostering our operations moving forward. When the Tui Macuata requested, I had to think deep because it is costly.”
However, the risk paid off handsomely.
“I see that at the end of the game the packed crowd and the support that we have is good for both institutions. It is good PR for us, we had to ride on that momentum.
The Commissioner emphasised that the massive public attention generated by the Sukuna Bowl was a strategic platform to highlight crucial social battles.
“We had to ride on that momentum then continue with the hard work of getting rid of drugs also the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Tudravu revealed that the Police approach to the week leading up to the game was dual-focused, ensuring that operational duties were not neglected for sporting glory.
“For us, we approached this week with two focuses. So that we can meet the intentions which I have stated which is the enforcement of the law, protecting the general public and we did that this week.
“I’m thankful to those who are wearing the uniform delivering at our various outposts while the boys are playing at Subrail Park.”
