NEARLY 300 primary and secondary school students from the Levuka, Ovalau area convened at Nasau Park for the final day of the Fijian Drua’s community blitz yesterday.
Students from ten school in the area gathered there for the community blitz, eagerly awaiting the arrival of players into the venue.
The six players from the club, such as Ponipate Loganimasi, Mesulame Dolokoto, Joseva Tamani, Tiana Robanakadavu, Vani Arei and Mereiwairita Neivosa took part in the blitz.
Drua academy and engagement lead Ben Takubu hailed the two-day community blitz as a great success, considering this being the team’s first visit to the island.
“From our point of view, it’s been a success on the island, especially given (the fact) that this is our first time to Ovalau,” Takubu shared.
“This is part of our long term plan to reach out into the communities as well.”
With this visit, Takubu relayed this was part of a plan devised by the Drua’s high performance unit and other departments in the club to reach out to communities such as Ovalau in the vein of giving back to communities as such for the support rendered to the club in the last four seasons of the Super Rugby Pacific competition.
He also highlighted key takeaways of their time on the island this week.
“One is the unveiling of some of the natural talents, or the raw talents we have on the island – there’s a lot to be honest.
“The other thing is just building that strong relationship that we have with the communities as well as the stakeholders.”
With the Ovalau engagement wrapped up, the team’s next community blitz will be at Subrail Park in Labasa next month.
