THE M.Recht Devo Babas rugby side has finally received their $8000 prize money after concerns were raised earlier this week about an initial cheque that could not be deposited.

Tournament organisers confirmed in a statement on their social media page that Na Momo na Tui Lawa, Ratu Ilesa Neitauniyalo, personally visited the team at the CAAF Compound in Namaka, Nadi, to formally hand over the prize money won at last weekend’s Yaro Chiefs 7s Tournament.

Devo Babas defeated Wardens Gold 33-19 in the main cup final, a win organisers said reflected the team’s unity and strength and brought pride to their families and community.

In a statement, organisers said the chief’s presence added cultural significance to the occasion, and a yaqona presentation was made in his honour as a traditional gesture of respect. This followed an earlier Facebook post by the team regarding the unpaid cheque, which has since been removed.

The statement added that the visit was also a reminder that challenges and misunderstandings are best resolved through respectful dialogue rather than social media, reinforcing the importance of unity and harmony within the community.

“Vinaka saka vakalevu, Na Momo na Tui Lawa, for your gracious leadership and support.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji Bitter 7s series kicks off next week with the Lomaiviti 7s from November 28-29.
